Throughout his first three years of high school, Brody Janzen has shown he is a good shooter through games and practices.
“I just do it naturally” Brody said when asked what makes his shot so good. He couldn’t describe what he did to make it so good, “it was just a feeling.” He continued to state that he would practice lots at both the outdoor courts and on his driveway at home. He could shoot for hours he said and never get bored. He practices non-stop to get his shot consistent.
During his last game, he got sick and played for one quarter. During the one quarter he played he hit three three’s and a free throw, still outscoring some of his teammates that played the full game.
This past year, Brody tried out for the Manitoba Provincial team. He went into the tryouts unsure whether he would make the team or not, but ended up making it.
Coaches stated that he made the team because he can shoot consistently and is a competitive player. Brody did end up making the team because of his shooting after all.
He started off the season being the only player from Winkler. “I didn’t care at all that I was the only Winker guy, making friends came easily for me” says Brody.
He got lots of playing time because of his shooting. His coach would put him in every game as a starter and keep him in depending on his shooting that game.
At the beginning of the season, Brody began every game as a starter, but claimed that his shooting was terrible. He would only hit 10 points a game, but throughout the season he started knocking down more shots for an average of 20 points a game. Brody shot 45% from the three-point line and even more from the free-throw line.
For his last three games, Brody remembers hitting at least 6 shots from three-point line and a bunch of shots from inside the paint. “It was a good way to end the season” he says.
While playing for the Provincial team he got noticed by other coaches. One of the coaches happened to be the Manitoba Bison's club team coach. Brody got offered a spot on that team and he took it. For the rest of the summer and into the school year, he played on this team and continued to improve.
After the Bison's tournaments ended, it went straight into the Zodiacs season. Brody tried out for the Varsity team, and he made the team as a starter. He played lots and continued hitting shots.
Looking back to his first year playing for the Zodiacs, Brody made the Junior Varsity team. “I don’t really know why I made the team, I couldn’t shoot back then” Brody states thinking about his grade nine year. He mentions not knowing how he got so much better from grade nine to ten. He barely practiced over the summer, but could shoot much better in grade ten. Just natural.
“Brody loves playing basketball” says his mom. He has lots of talent and potential to be very good.
